Pinoy GMs Paragua, Dableo make presence felt

Pinoy GMs Paragua, Dableo make presence felt
09/26/2009 12:47 PM

Filipino players made their presence felt in the fourth President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo Cup international chess championship with GM Mark Paragua and GM-elect Ronald Dableo leading the charge with impressive victories over their higher-rated foreign rivals at the Duty Free Fiesta Mall in Parañaque City.

Paragua, ever so eager to regain his billing as the country’s top player, pulled the rug from under second seed GM Gopal Nayanan of India in the biggest upset win so far in the tough, six-day tournament featuring 56 players.

Dableo, who nailed his third and last GM norm during the Kuala Lumpur Open last month, shocked sixth seed GM Merab Gagunashvili of Georgia to boost his chances for the title and the top prize of US$6,000.

Seeded only 15th with an ELO of 2501, Paragua, also whipped Rainier Labay, while No. 23 Dableo (2417), humbled Angel Cordero for a leading 2 points apiece.

Dresden Olympiad sensation GM John Paul Gomez trounced Conrado Diaz in the first round and subdued Emmanuel Senador in the second, while IM Barlo Nadera outclassed Lyndon Lumancas and upset No. 10 seed GM Darwin Laylo to join Paragua and Dableo in the lead pack.

No. 25 seed GM Meng Kong Wong of Singapore emerged as the only foreign player with perfect score of two points after beating Danilo Jorda and No. 8 GM Tigran Kotanjian of Armenia.

World Youth Chess Olympiad 2009

World Youth Chess Olympiad 2009

Russia and India are favorites

Turkey is organizing World U-16 Chess Olmypiad for boys and girls for the fifth time under the auspicies of FIDE and the Turkish Chess Federation. The fifth edition is being played at the Municipality of Akhisar. Almost 120 players from 16 different countries and a total of 22 teams are playing in the Olympiad. The competition dates are 24th September - 3rd October, 2009.

The opening ceremony was held on Friday 24th of September. Protocol speeches done by the President of Turkish Chess Federation Mr. Ali Nihat Yazıcı, mayor of the Municipality of Akhisar Mr. Salih Hızlı and district governer of Akhisar Mr. Mustafa Çek. After the speeches, members of the teams of all participating countries and people from Akhisar joined a sightseeing tour in Akhisar.

The tournament hall is located in a seperate zone called "Chess Island". In this 'island', players are having their matches in a hall covered by trees and a small symbolic pool around the island.

First round took almost 4 hours to be completed. At the end, there were no surprise at the team level, as the 2008 Youth Olympiad winners India won all their games. On the other hand, some players showed great individual performances in other matches even though their teams lost their overall encounters. For example half points got by talented girls Cansu Söylemez(TR) and Emel Kaya (TR) against FM Dubov(RUS) and FM Lorand(HUN) respectively, the effort of Rustem Nazarov (TKM) in drawing against FN Baijarani(AZE) and the win by Ufuk Sezen Arat (TR) against Baghdasaryan(ARM) were among the most notable results in first round.

As it happened in the 2008 Youth Chess Olympiad, the competition favorites will be Russia and India, who will be competing on board and team level.

Kasparov beats Karpov in rerun of 1984 chess clash
Fri Sep 25, 2009 5:05am EDT

MADRID (Reuters Life!) - Russian chess legend Gary Kasparov has won a re-match of his classic 1984 world championship contest with compatriot Anatoly Karpov, ending a 12-match clash in the Spanish city of Valencia 9-3.

In relaxed surroundings worlds away from the original clash -- played out amid Cold War tension which had converted Kasparov into a western favorite -- Kasparov won five speed matches in the final eight-match clash late on Thursday.

The players plan to play again in Paris in December, a spokeswoman for the Valencia regional government said.

In 1984 Kasparov, now 46 and a leading opponent of Russian Prime Minister Vladimimir Putin, waged an epic battle with then reigning champion Karpov, now 58, which was called off after 48 matches because of concern over the players' health.

Kasparov said the 1984 match was called off to save Karpov from defeat -- and a nervous breakdown -- as the match had come to symbolize the competing forces then at play in the Soviet Union. Karpov was a darling of the Soviet establishment.

By the time the 1984 match was halted, Karpov had won five games and Kasparov three, with 40 draws. Both said they wanted to play on.

Managers in Chess

Managers in Chess

Agenda and Annexes for the 80th FIDE Congress are published on the FIDE website. The Congress takes place from 11th to 18th October in Khalkidiki, Greece.

Among many interesting proposals (annexes), we will note one that calls for regulation and certificates for players' managers:

Today there are many people around the world they say that they are manager of professional players. But unfortunately many f them they do not have any idea about all rules of chess or they are not qualified to communicate to make this job in a minimum level properly. Our players are certainly suffered from this and also there are bad examples on this issue that some of those people calling themselves as manager exploiting the carrier and rights of our eminent players due to their lack of professionalism.

Like in football and other sports, it is time to define this function under FIDE regulations and make a certificate after an exam like arbiters, organisers, or trainers.
